Having had a colicy first child, I chose to try the Dr. Brown's bottles in additional to several other types ; brands. I've ended up storing all the others and using the Dr. Brown's exclusively.
After reading countless reviews, I've bought and tried several other types/brands. All bottles other than the Dr. Browns created suction. The nipples would collapse, resulting in leaks and a frustrated, gassy baby. I would have to remove the bottle from his mouth to get the air (and bubbles)to go back into the bottle so he could start sucking again. The gas in his belly would last hours-making him uncomfortable and disrupting his sleep. (equals tired, cranky Mommy)
The Dr. Brown's were the only bottles that I didn't have that problem with. My son is able to feed continuously and comfortably with a consistent flow and no air bubbles. Our feedings are cleaner, relaxing, and more comfortable.
Other reviews have sited a "con" as having more bottle parts to wash. I thought that would be tedious, but gave the Dr. Brown's a try anyway. Thus far, it has NOT been an issue. ANY bottle you use will have atleast 3 parts to wash (bottle, collar, nip) the Dr. Brown's have an additional 2 parts (resevoir tube, valve). I am happy to spend an extra minute at the sink, rather than countless hours with a fussy baby. The trade-off is a no brainer.
The ONLY issue that I've had with the Dr. Brown's is that the stage 1 nips still flowed too fast for my newborn. I am using the Playtex Air Vent Stage 1 nips instead. I have not tried the Br. Brown' premie nips, but suspect they'd work just as well. FYI-the Dr. Brown's are slightly taller than other bottles when they have the cap on. Keep that in mind if you're buying a bottle cooler for travel.
Skip the smaller 4oz bottles and go for all 8oz. Buy a soft bottle brush that won't scratch the plastic bottles. Again, I've tried several, but like the Avent brush with travel case. It seems soft, will last and doesn't spray me with water ever time I remove it from the bottle.
Amazon seems to have the best price on Dr. Brown's.

I read a review of the glass Dr. Brown bottles that complained that the painted-on ounces markings wore off in the dishwasher, so I got two glass bottles and two of these BPA-free PP ones just to see. The big drawback is that the plastic ones hold in smells. I made the mistake of washing them once with Mrs. Meyer's dish soap, and they are basically ruined because they are now permanently honeysuckle scented, which is gross. Even just running them through the dishwasher with scent-free Method dishwasher tabs caused them to retain the scent of hot, washed food. It's really not something I would ever want to make my baby smell while drinking. Get the glass--you can hand wash them (it takes TWO minutes) if you're worried about losing the paint (which hasn't happened to me after 7 months) and they rinse clean, every time.

We wanted to try Dr. Brown's bottle cause our LO is gassy and spits up more often than we like. I was debating to get the wide neck or the standard. The wide neck made so much more sense since the nipple is more of a modern design (like Avent and others) and Dr. Brown claims its more closer to actual breast nipples. In addition, the wide neck provides a good large opening for easy mixing of formula.
However, we have a big problem with this model. The standard version has a MADE IN USA shield tagged in front of the box, this one doesn't. Upon closer inspection, we found out this unit was made in China. We went back to the store where we purchased from and as it turns out, all of the wide neck bottles are made in China. I guess Handi-Craft decided to bring their newer line manufacturing to China. In my opinion, its a big mistake. We like Dr. Brown's bottle, our baby doesn't need to burp as much compared to Avent. For whatever reason, they decided they need to compete in price or increase profit.... what a shame. Quality control in China its almost a guessing game. Just remember the recent lead paint in toys and melamine laced milk powders (domestic products within China) I'm sure parents will pay a premium for products that's made in a place where quality controls matters.
Avent is made in England, Born-Free is made in Israel. They all have vented bottles that reduces colics. I will try out the standard version but not sure if our baby will get used to the smaller nipple and latch on. If that doesn't work, guess which brand I'm going to switch now... what a shame.
EDIT: Yes, the product works great, our LO spits up/vomits less and the level 1 nipples flows slower than Avent's lvl 1, which is a good thing for our LO, she tends to choke on Avent's. She burps much less now which is a good thing but its harder on us since we expect her to burp so the burping session is longer than usual now. Maybe later we will feel comfortable not trying to burp her for that long.
We also tried the standard version, unfortunately, our LO won't take to its smaller nipple and mixing formula is not easy with its narrower neck.
Overall, Dr. Brown's wide neck is the best bottle for reducing colic and gases. We just can't trust where its made. We even wrote to the company to express our disappointment in which they responded assuring us that all products coming from overseas are vigorously tested by 3rd party. Even with that assurance, we can't be 100% confidence with its quality.

If you are looking for the best option out there for reducing gas/colic/spit-up, this is your answer. We have tried NUK, Playtex Drop-Ins, Avent, BornFree, Dr. Weil, and Soothie bottles. When it comes to reducing gas, especially for newborns, these are the clear winner. My son had a really sensitive stomach (we even used sensitive formula), and these were the only thing that helped. My daughters weren't as sensitive, but I noticed a clear change in the amount of gas and spit up they had after using these.
Once you understand how the internal vent works, it makes sense why these bottles are the best for tiny bellies. While the Avent is also very popular, you can see how the Avent system allows air to come in underneath formula at the end of an inverted bottle where the nipple meets the bottle. This leads to teeny, tiny, micro-bubbles that filter up in the formula. While all of my babies were able to use Avents later in infancy without trouble, those tiny bubbles were troubling as newborns. Dr. Brown's bottles don't suck air in, but prevent any vacuum in the first place.
However, Dr. Brown's are not the most streamlined bottles if you just need a run-of-the-mill feeding device, particularly for older infants. There are many parts with tiny holes and crevices to clean (they even provide you with a q-tip sized brush for such pieces), and there are occasional malfunctions that lead to spills. If you fill the bottle above the "fill" line, you can count on a spill.
My solution to the cleaning issue if you don't put bottles in the dishwasher (I don't when my babies are real little, don't want any detergent residue..), is to rinse the bottles after feedings to remove the majority of the formula. Then I put the bottles in a hot, soapy soak in the sink. If I've rinsed the bottles well enough after feedings, I don't worry about getting every piece with a brush every time. For a newborn however, I boil the pieces to further sterilize them after the soapy soak.
I much more prefer the wide neck to the standard neck Dr. Browns, as they are soooo much easier to dump formula scoops into and much easier to wash with a bottle brush. I also like the wider nipple as we eventually "graduate" to Avent and Dr. Weil bottles once my babies seem to have better digestion. My two daughters loved the wide neck design, but my son had a hard time latching on to the wide nipple shape for some reason. We used the standard-neck Dr. Brown's with him during his early months; he had no problem switching to Avent at about 4 months, even though the nipples were quite different.
Once my babies have more developed digestive systems and aren't so sensitive to gas, we pack up all the Dr. Brown's their many peices and move on to Avent and Dr. Weil bottles, which have a much more streamlined, simple air-vent system (nipple, ring, bottle). My babies have had no problem switching around 4-5 months of age, and its easier to put up with all the Dr. Brown's pieces when you know you don't have to use them forever. Of course, this means that we own twice as many bottles...but this way we get the best of both worlds -- the colic/gas relief of Dr. Brown's during the newborn phase, and the convenience of Avent for the rest of infancy.
I would suggest any expecting parent buy at least a few of these to try with a newborn. For anyone looking for a better bottle option for colic or gas, you've found your answer!

Dr. Brown's bottle features a patented two-piece internal vent system that works unlike any other bottle design. The vent system fully vents our bottle for vacuum free feeding, which we call positive-pressure flow, similar to breastfeeding. As the baby feeds, air is channeled from the nipple collar through the vent system, bypassing the breast milk or formula, to the back of the bottle. Air never mixes with the breast milk or formula which minimizes oxidation and helps maintain essential nutrients like vitamins C, A and E. Babies feed more comfortably because the vent system allows them to nurse without fighting the negative effects of a vacuum or the discomfort of ingesting air bubbles. I love these glass bottles! The pictures are not accurate to what the bottles look like though, which for once is a good thing! These bottles don't have any labels on them, the Dr.Brown's is actually etched on the bottle as are the oz's, which means no pealing or flaking. The bottles are a little heavier than the BPA free ones obviously because they are glass. My daughter threw one on the floor many a times the days following purchase and not a crack or chip! These bottles are also 8 oz I'm not sure why it took so long to come out with the 4 and 8 oz versions, but I have both and love them! They clean easily enough and can go right in the dishwasher and come out spotless! I am very pleased with Dr Brown's bottles and their customer service! If you've ever had an issue and had to deal with a customer service rep from Dr Brown's they are EXCELLENT! They fully stand behind their product!

I love Dr. Browns 3.5 oz glass bottles and thought these were essentially the same just a little bigger. I am SO frustrated with them however because after I got these 4 oz bottles home and washed them (so I can't return them, nuts!) I realized the top/opening is just a little bit off from the standardized size that Evenflow/Dr Browns3.5oz/Medela bottles are. This means i can't connect them directly to my Medela pump, and I can't use the medela storage covers on them. Also, the vent system is also just a tiny titch longer than the 3.5 oz Dr Browns vent system, so you can't mix ; match. Very frustrating. I prefer the 3.5 oz ones for the standardized opening.

Dr. Brown's bottles came very highly recommended by several of my friends. Despite their recommendations, I decided to try another brand of bottles. We very quickly switched to Dr. Brown's for a few reasons. My daughter did not like the other bottles but did great with accepting Dr. Brown's. She had to take bottles directly out of the hospital due to weight loss but transitioned well back to the breast. The part that is especially great about the bottles is that they have the same threading to work with Ameda and Medela breast pumps. I have personally used them with my Ameda Purely Yours Ultra pump.
If you use them with the Ameda pump, the one draw back is that the bottle is narrower than Ameda. As a result, when empty the flange is heavy enough to make them tip over and they do not fit snugly into the bottle holders on the top of the pump. Otherwise they work great.

Though more expensive than other brands this is worth every penny. My daughter will not use any other bottle. Do NOT listen to the complants of leaks as long as you use all the parts together, this works well and has never leaks. It has a positive pressure that keeps bubbles out of babys belly and baby and mom happy. I wish I would have bought these before all the other ones.
